Two Hours Free Parking in Bingham Car Parks to Remain

Efforts to address parking availability in Bingham have led to the decision to retain two hours of free parking across the town’s car parks. Rushcliffe Borough Council (RBC) has confirmed this decision as part of broader measures aimed at improving parking accessibility and convenience in the area.

After considering various proposals, including reducing the free parking period to one hour, authorities opted to extend it to two hours. This decision will undergo assessment over twelve months.

Central to this decision-making process was balancing the interests of residents, local businesses, and visitors. Insights from surveys conducted among car park users last year and feedback from stakeholders influenced the council’s decision.

In addition to retaining two hours of free parking, recommendations include introducing thirty minutes of free parking in designated bays around the market place. This aims to encourage short-stay parking, reducing congestion in the town centre.

New tariffs will be implemented in certain car parks, with rates varying depending on the duration of stay. For instance, parking for up to two hours will remain free, while fees will be charged for longer durations, ranging from £1 for 2-3 hours to £10 for 4-12 hours.

An RBC spokesperson highlighted the council’s commitment to accommodating the diverse needs of motorists, shoppers, and local businesses. Emphasising the importance of community feedback, the spokesperson affirmed that the council had sought solutions benefiting all stakeholders involved.

Moreover, the introduction of these measures aligns with the overarching objectives outlined in the Council’s Off-Street Car Parking Strategy. The impact of these changes will be evaluated at the end of the twelve-month period, with adjustments made as necessary.

Funds generated from car parking will be reinvested to cover the costs associated with implementing these changes, including installing new parking machines and maintaining existing infrastructure.

As part of the package, restrictions on parking during market days will be relaxed, allowing for greater flexibility in space utilisation. Additionally, a limited number of chargeable spaces will be allocated at Bingham Arena to accommodate long-stay parking for employees of local businesses.

The implementation of these initiatives is subject to approval, with the process expected to take approximately six months. The Bingham Car Parking Strategy Group, comprising representatives from RBC, Bingham Town Council, and Nottinghamshire County Council, has been instrumental in driving these discussions forward.

In conclusion, the decision to retain two hours of free parking in Bingham’s car parks underscores efforts to balance the diverse needs of stakeholders while enhancing the overall parking experience. With ongoing evaluation and community engagement at the forefront, these measures signify progress towards fostering a more accessible and inclusive parking environment in Bingham.
