A surge in running enthusiasm is poised to animate the city streets of Chester this forthcoming Sunday, as the annual MBNA Chester 10K returns with a record-breaking number of participants.

Since its inception in 2018, the event has steadily gained popularity. However, this year, organisers are thrilled to announce an impressive entry list of 5,000 runners. This figure surpasses the previous record of approximately 4,000 participants in 2020, marking a significant milestone for the race.

The iconic racecourse at Chester will once again serve as the starting point for the 10-kilometre (6.2-mile) course. From there, runners will traverse through the city streets, following a route that includes Stadium Way, the Aldi Roundabout, Parkgate Road, Mollington, Cheyney Road, Bouverie Street, Raymond Street, and Canal Street before culminating in a thrilling finish.

In preparation for the event, several road closures will be implemented to ensure the safety of both runners and spectators. Parkgate Road (A540) will be closed from 8:30 am to 11:30 am, while Nuns Road will observe closure between 4 am and 2 pm. Additionally, New Crane Street will experience temporary closure coinciding with the commencement of the race waves.

The race will be divided into two waves, commencing at 9 am and 9:30 am respectively, promising an exhilarating display of athleticism and determination from participants.

Reflecting on the anticipated spectacle, a spokesperson for the race remarked, “Feedback from the runners continues to affirm their tremendous excitement from the surroundings and spectator support as they make their final effort down past the Town Hall and Cathedral to reach Eastgate Street, overseen by the iconic Eastgate Clock, providing an ideal setting for a charged finish.”

Echoing this sentiment, an event organiser expressed excitement for the expected display of speed and endurance, stating, “It is anticipated the fastest runners will be speeding down Northgate Street at around 9:30 am, and we anticipate numerous spectators will turn out to support them and relish the sporting action.”

Sponsorship and community involvement are integral aspects of the MBNA Chester 10K, with a spokesperson expressing pride in the partnership. “We’re delighted to be supporting the Chester 10K once again this year,” they stated. “It is a fantastic event that truly gives back to the local community, and we’re honoured to be a part of it year on year.”

The spokesperson further highlighted the charitable aspect of the race, noting the involvement in supporting runners raising funds for various causes. This year, the race’s official charity partner is the West Cheshire Foodbank, an organisation dedicated to addressing food poverty in the region.

As part of the initiative, organisers are encouraging both participants and spectators to contribute to the West Cheshire Foodbank by bringing food donations on race day. This collaborative effort aims to provide immediate support to those in need within the community.

The MBNA Chester 10K serves as the inaugural event in the Chester Triple Medal Series, which includes the Essar Chester 2024 Half Marathon on Sunday, May 19, and the MBNA Chester Marathon and Metric Marathon on Sunday, October 6. Collectively, these races are anticipated to raise £1 million for local and national causes, embodying the spirit of unity and philanthropy.

In conclusion, the 2024 MBNA Chester 10K promises to be a celebration of athleticism, community spirit, and charitable giving. With a record-breaking number of participants and a shared commitment to making a positive impact, the event stands as a testament to the enduring allure of distance running and the collective strength of the Chester community.
