Concerns Arise Over Missed Bin Collections in Brighton and Hove

Residents across various neighbourhoods in Brighton and Hove have voiced complaints regarding missed rubbish collections, sparking worries about a potential strike as the union prepares to hold a ballot over job losses and proposed changes to working practices.

Despite recent claims by the council suggesting an improvement in service delivery, reports indicate a surge in complaints regarding missed collections in areas such as Round Hill, Hanover, Hollingbury, and Patcham. Official figures released by the Brighton and Hove City Council unveiled a total of 705 missed collections in the first four weeks of January alone.

The numbers depict a fluctuating trend, with instances ranging from 115 in the initial week to a peak of 218 during the week commencing Monday, 15th January. Alarming data reveals a sharp increase in missed collections, with 731 reported in the week starting 29th January, surpassing the total for the preceding four weeks combined.

Adding to the challenges, a significant portion of Cityclean vehicles, approximately 48 out of 59, were marked as “defective” during the same period, affecting operational efficiency.

Further exacerbating the situation, a fire incident at the council’s Cityclean depot in Hollingdean on Friday, 9th February, resulted in damage to a bin lorry and another vehicle, posing additional hurdles to regular waste management operations.

Amidst these developments, the GMB union, representing workers in waste management and related sectors, has voiced concerns over proposed job cuts and alterations to work protocols. The potential strike threat looms large as members of the union voted overwhelmingly, with a 95 per cent majority, in favour of balloting for industrial action.

The recent turbulence in waste management services contrasts with previous improvements touted by the council. A report to the council’s Strategy, Finance and City Regeneration Committee highlighted a notable decline in missed collections, down by 90 per cent in December compared to August figures, following extensive efforts to address underlying issues, including reports of a toxic work environment and allegations of intimidation.

Affected residents have expressed frustration and called for greater transparency from the council. Speculation about deliberate delays in collections to exert pressure on authorities amidst labour disputes has been rife.

Concerns were echoed by Green councillors who emphasised the urgency of resolving operational inefficiencies and ensuring timely waste collection services, particularly in areas experiencing prolonged disruptions.

Conservative councillors highlighted the impact of inconsistent service delivery on residents, urging swift action to address underlying challenges within Cityclean operations. Questions were raised about the efficacy of proposed job cuts, emphasising the need for sustainable solutions to improve service reliability.

In response to mounting concerns, Labour councillors reiterated the commitment to collaborative efforts with staff and trade unions to enhance service quality and foster a safer workplace culture. Plans for restructuring rounds and implementing digital systems were outlined as part of broader initiatives aimed at addressing operational shortcomings.

As tensions escalate amidst looming strike threats and ongoing negotiations, residents remain hopeful for swift resolutions to ensure uninterrupted waste management services and mitigate disruptions in Brighton and Hove.
