Apple Releases iOS 18.4 Public Beta with Exciting New Features

On February 24, Apple launched the first public beta of iOS 18.4, following the release of iOS 18.3 in January. While iOS 18.3 focused on essential fixes, the new beta introduces several innovative features for developers and public beta testers. These include Priority Notifications, a new Sketch mode in Image Playground, ambient music controls, and more. As with any beta release, it’s recommended to install it on a secondary device to avoid potential bugs and battery issues.

Priority Notifications with Apple Intelligence

One of the standout features in the iOS 18.4 beta is Priority Notifications, available on Apple Intelligence-compatible devices like the iPhone 15 Pro, Pro Max, and iPhone 16 models. This feature separates important notifications into a dedicated section on the Lock Screen, making it easier to catch up on what matters most. Users can enable this by going to Settings > Notifications > Prioritize Notifications. While the feature is off by default, it offers a streamlined way to manage alerts without missing critical information.

Enhancements in Image Playground and Ambient Music

The iOS 18.4 beta also brings updates to Image Playground, Apple’s image generator. A new Sketch art style creates colorful, notebook-like sketches, adding to the existing Animation and Illustration styles. Additionally, ambient music controls have been added to the Control Center, offering options like Sleep, Chill, Productivity, and Wellbeing. Users can customize playlists for each mode, enhancing their experience during work, relaxation, or chores. This feature complements existing tools like Background Sounds, positioning the iPhone as a go-to device for ambient audio needs.

New Features in Apple News and Default App Changes

Apple News Plus subscribers will appreciate the new Food section, featuring recipes from notable publications. Recipes can be saved for offline use, and a cook mode provides full-screen instructions. This move by Apple seems to compete with other platforms like The New York Times’ Cooking section, offering valuable content without extra charges. Furthermore, iOS 18.4 allows users to change default apps for translation and navigation, with EU users now able to set third-party apps like Google Translate or Waze as defaults.

Updates to Podcasts and Siri Integration

The Podcasts app now offers more widget options, letting users play episodes from specific shows or custom lists. While new settings are present, their functionality is currently limited and is expected to be expanded in future updates. Additionally, Siri integration with Apple Intelligence provides app-specific suggestions, helping users discover features within apps like Messages, Mail, and Settings.

Expanding Apple Intelligence Accessibility

Apple is broadening the availability of Apple Intelligence with iOS 18.4, introducing support for more languages, including Spanish, French, and Japanese. Users in the EU will also gain access to these features for the first time, reflecting Apple’s efforts to expand its reach and enhance the iPhone experience globally.

In summary, the iOS 18.4 beta offers a range of features aimed at improving user experience, from notification management to enhanced creativity and productivity tools. As Apple continues to refine these features before the official release in April, users can look forward to a more intuitive and personalized iPhone experience.
