From England to Cyprus: A Life-Changing Decision
My wife and I embarked on our retirement journey in England, drawn by its rich culture, beautiful countryside, and family ties. However, after three years, we realized England wasn’t the perfect fit for us. The short summers and long, gray winters left us yearning for something more. Our path to Cyprus began when I needed cataract surgery, and we explored medical tourism options in Europe. Cyprus stood out with its excellent clinics, and a week-long visit in 2017 sealed our fate. We fell in love with the island’s charm and decided to make it our new home. Six months later, we moved into a Mediterranean-facing apartment, just as England was part of the EU, simplifying our residency process. Nearly a decade later, Cyprus has become our haven, a place where we’ve found joy, tranquility, and endless opportunities for adventure.
A Laid-Back Lifestyle with Endless Opportunities
Life in Cyprus is laid-back yet fulfilling, offering a perfect balance of relaxation and activities. The island’s rich history, spanning over 10,000 years, provides endless opportunities for exploration. From 600-year-old monasteries and Crusader villages to Roman ruins, botanical gardens, and secluded beaches, there’s always something new to discover. For the adventurous, Cyprus offers world-class golf courses, car rallies, marathons, scuba diving, and surfing. Cultural enthusiasts can enjoy symphonies, ballets, operas, and film festivals. Despite the abundance of activities, our days are serene. Mornings often begin with strong Cypriot coffee and fresh fruit, followed by a dip in the sea. Afternoons are spent exploring or socializing with friends, culminating in a leisurely siesta. Evenings are filled with delicious meals made from local ingredients or shared with friends at a nearby tavern.
A Fresh and Flavorful Mediterranean Diet
Cyprus’s Mediterranean diet has been a delightful surprise, offering fresh, healthy, and varied options. The favorable climate allows for an abundance of fruits, vegetables, and livestock, ensuring we never lack for fresh produce. Local chicken and pork are exceptionally flavorful, and the island’s wineries and beers provide plenty of options for those who enjoy a drink. Festivals celebrating beer and wine add to the cultural vibrancy of the island. The fresh, wholesome food has not only enhanced our meals but also contributed to our overall well-being, making us feel grateful for the culinary richness Cyprus offers.
Sunshine and Seasons: A Climate to Adore
Cyprus’s sunny weather, which prevails about 75% of the year, has been a highlight of our retirement. Long, warm summers stretch from May to October, though they can be hot and dry. Spring and autumn bring comfortably warm temperatures, making them the most pleasant times of the year. Winters are cool, with December and January seeing rainfall that replenishes the island’s water reservoirs for the dry summers. Dust storms occur occasionally, but they are manageable, and we simply avoid outdoor activities during the worst of them. Overall, the sunny climate has been a perfect fit for us, enhancing our quality of life and providing endless opportunities to enjoy the outdoors.
