The young techies behind DOGE are a lightning rod for criticism but also a youth magnet for the GOP

The Rise of Young Techies in Politics: A New Era of Government Efficiency?

In recent months, the political landscape in the United States has seen an unusual shift with the rise of young tech-savvy engineers influencing federal policy. At the center of this movement is Elon Musk, the billionaire CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, who has assembled a team of young software engineers to work on a project called the Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE. This team, comprised mostly of individuals in their early 20s, has been tasked with streamlining government operations and cutting bureaucratic red tape. While critics on the left raise concerns about privacy and accountability, conservatives are hailing this group as a breath of fresh air in Washington, D.C.

For many on the right, particularly influential figures like Charlie Kirk, founder of Turning Point, these young engineers represent a much-needed injection of innovation and energy into a government often criticized for being slow and outdated. Kirk has referred to them as “young prodigies” and “all-stars” with exceptionally high IQs, framing their involvement as a “Gen Z, millennial takeover of the federal government.” This narrative resonates deeply with young conservatives who feel that the Democratic Party has failed to engage their generation effectively.

The DOGE Team: A Controversial Force in Government

Since President Donald Trump’s return to the White House, the DOGE team has quickly embedded itself within federal agencies, making sweeping changes with little oversight. Musk has praised the team as “some of the world’s best software engineers,” and Trump has echoed this sentiment, calling them “very brilliant young people” and “high-IQ individuals.” Many of these engineers have ties to Musk’s companies or Silicon Valley billionaires like Peter Thiel, raising questions about their independence and potential conflicts of interest.

However, the group’s rise has not been without controversy. One team member, 25-year-old Marko Elez, faced scrutiny after racist social media posts surfaced, leading to his resignation before being rehired. Critics like Hillary Clinton have also questioned their qualifications, pointing out that many of them are too young to even rent a car. Despite these criticisms, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy has defended the team, arguing that their youth and fresh perspectives are precisely what the government needs to modernize and improve efficiency.

The Cultural Shift in the Republican Party

The celebration of DOGE engineers reflects a broader cultural shift within the Republican Party. For years, the GOP has been perceived as the party of older, traditional voters, but recent efforts to engage younger demographics have started to bear fruit. In the 2024 election, nearly half of voters under 30 supported Trump, marking a significant shift from previous cycles. This trend is particularly pronounced among young men, who have been drawn to the party’s economic policies and its stance on cultural issues.

Conservative podcasters like Jen Horn and Katie Gorka have amplified the narrative of DOGE as a symbol of youthful innovation, framing the engineers as saviors of a government mired in bureaucracy. Their enthusiasm has resonated with young Republicans like Alex Dwyer, a 28-year-old financial analyst who feels that the party is finally recognizing the value of young people. Dwyer and others see DOGE as proof that their generation is being taken seriously and that their contributions are making a real impact.

The Democratic Party’s Struggle to Engage Young Voters

While Republicans are leveraging the DOGE team to appeal to young voters, Democrats are grappling with their own challenges in engaging this demographic. In the 2024 election, Vice President Kamala Harris narrowly won among voters under 30, but her margin was significantly smaller than Joe Biden’s in 2020. This slippage has raised alarms within the party, with many young progressives feeling sidelined or ignored.

Young Democrats like Sunjay Muralitharan, national president of College Democrats of America, are skeptical that the Republican Party’s focus on DOGE will genuinely attract more young people. They argue that the team’s association with billionaires like Musk and the perception of unchecked power undermine its appeal. Meanwhile, Democratic strategists like Basil Smikle acknowledge that the party has failed to effectively showcase its own young leaders, such as gun control activist David Hogg and Florida Rep. Maxwell Frost, the youngest member of Congress.

The Broader Implications for American Politics

The rise of DOGE and the celebration of young techies in government highlight a deeper generational shift in American politics. For Republicans, this trend represents an opportunity to rebrand themselves as the party of innovation and youth, challenging the long-held perception of Democrats as the more dynamic and progressive option. For Democrats, it serves as a wake-up call to better empower and promote their own young leaders.

As experts like John Della Volpe of the Harvard Kennedy School note, the Republican Party’s ability to tap into the frustrations and aspirations of young people could have long-term consequences for the Democratic Party’s ability to retain the youth vote. If Democrats fail to address these concerns and create meaningful opportunities for young leaders, they risk losing a generation of voters to the GOP.

In the end, the story of DOGE and its young engineers is more than just a political talking point—it is a reflection of the broader cultural and generational changes shaping American democracy. Whether this shift will lead to lasting change or fade away as a fleeting trend remains to be seen.
