The email, sent by the Office of Personnel Management (OPM), asked workers to document five things they accomplished in the past week and include their supervisors in the response. The subject line, "What did you do last week?" was straightforward, but the implications were far more complex.

The directive, part of President Trump’s broader push for government efficiency, was championed by Elon Musk, the billionaire CEO overseeing the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). Musk made it clear that failure to respond would be treated as a resignation, though the original email from OPM did not explicitly state this. The deadline for responses was set for Monday at midnight, leaving workers scrambling to comply.

Mixed Signals and Pushback

However, the situation took a turn when at least three federal agencies, including the FBI, the State Department, and the Pentagon, instructed their employees to disregard the OPM email. These agencies made it clear that they would handle any reviews internally, according to their own procedures. This created a confusing landscape for federal workers, many of whom were left wondering whether they should comply with the directive or follow their agency’s guidance.

The FBI’s newly sworn-in director, Kash Patel, told employees to “pause any responses” to the OPM memo, emphasizing that the FBI would handle its own review processes. Similarly, the State Department informed workers that they were not obligated to report their activities outside of their department’s chain of command. The Pentagon also advised employees to ignore the email, stating that it would coordinate any responses through its own channels.

In a follow-up post on X, he downplayed the burden on employees, saying, “The bar is very low here. An email with some bullet points that make any sense at all is acceptable! Should take less than 5 mins to write.” Musk’s tone suggested that the task was simple, but his earlier threat of forced resignation added an air of urgency and anxiety for many workers.

A Broader Push for Government Reform

The email controversy is just one part of a larger effort by the Trump administration to overhaul the federal government. Since Musk was appointed to lead DOGE, thousands of federal positions have been slashed, and the department has sought access to sensitive government data, sparking criticism and concern. President Trump has also championed a federal buyout plan, claiming that approximately 75,000 workers have accepted “deferred resignations.” Additionally, Trump recently ended remote work options for federal employees, emphasizing his vision of a smaller, more efficient government.

The move has drawn sharp criticism from federal employee unions and advocates. Everett Kelley, president of the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE), which represents over 750,000 workers, called Musk’s actions “cruel and disrespectful.” Kelley singled out Musk’s lack of public service experience, accusing him and the Trump administration of showing “utter disdain for federal employees.” The union has vowed to challenge any unlawful terminations resulting from the directive.

The Uncertainty Ahead

As the deadline for responses passed, the situation remained unresolved. While Musk’s threat of forced resignation added pressure on workers, the pushback from multiple agencies raised questions about the enforceability of the directive. For now, federal employees are left navigating a confusing and uncertain environment, with many wondering what the future holds for their jobs and the broader federal workforce.
