A Lasting Legacy: The Boulet Family’s Impact on Organ Donation in Canada

The Humboldt Broncos bus crash on April 7, 2018, left an indelible mark on Canada, claiming the lives of 16 individuals and forever changing the lives of countless others. Among those lost was Logan Boulet, a young man whose selfless decision to become an organ donor has inspired a nation. In the years since the tragedy, Logan’s parents, Toby and Bernadine Boulet, have become tireless advocates for organ donation, working to expand and normalize the practice across Canada. Their efforts have not only honored Logan’s legacy but have also saved lives, earning them widespread recognition and admiration. Ahead of the anniversary of the crash, the Boulets were recently honoured with King Charles III Coronation Medals for their dedication to this vital cause.

The Power of Logan’s Legacy

Logan Boulet’s decision to become an organ donor was a testament to his character, even in death. His organs were donated to six individuals, giving them a second chance at life. This act of selflessness sparked a movement, inspiring countless Canadians to register as organ donors. In his honour, Green Shirt Day was established—an annual event that celebrates the gift of life and promotes organ donation awareness. The Boulet family has embraced this legacy, using their grief as fuel to make a difference. “That day in April 2018 was a really hard day for us,” Bernadine reflected. “But knowing that people still support us, that they remember, means everything. We’re thankful that Logan’s legacy lives on.”

A Family’s Mission

The Boulets’ advocacy began in the aftermath of the crash, as they shared Logan’s story and the impact of his decision. Over the past seven years, they have worked tirelessly to educate Canadians about the importance of organ donation. Their efforts have resonated deeply, particularly in their hometown of Lethbridge and across southern Alberta. The Kidney Foundation of Canada recognized their contributions by nominating them for the King Charles III Coronation Medals, a prestigious honour that acknowledges their relentless dedication. “They didn’t ask to be a part of this cause—it came into their lives,” said Joyce Van Deurzen, executive director of the southern Alberta and Saskatchewan branch of the Kidney Foundation. “But they’ve embraced it with incredible passion and commitment.”

A Heartfelt Honour

When the Boulets were asked who they would like to present their medals, the choice was clear: Lethbridge Mayor Blaine Hyggen. Mayor Hyggen has been a steadfast supporter of the Boulet family, championing their cause and honouring Logan’s memory in meaningful ways. He played a key role in renaming the Adams Arena to the Logan Boulet Arena, a testament to the young man’s enduring impact on the community. For the mayor, presenting the medals was a deeply emotional moment. “They asked me to present this medal, and I thought, ‘Me?’” he shared. “But what an incredible honour. They’ve done so much for their community and for Canada.”

Reflecting on a Life Well-Lived

Logan’s life was cut tragically short, but his decision to donate his organs has left a lasting imprint on his community. “In death, there’s been some incredible life,” Mayor Hyggen remarked. His words capture the essence of Logan’s legacy—a legacy that continues to inspire and save lives. Jan Clemis, a kidney transplant recipient, echoed this sentiment: “We know that other families don’t have to lose their loved ones. We need to move forward to create a culture of organ donation, where it becomes the natural and normal thing to do.”

Moving Forward Together

The Boulet family’s journey is a powerful reminder of the impact one person can have. Through their advocacy, they have helped normalize organ donation and encouraged Canadians to consider giving the gift of life. As the nation reflects on the Humboldt Broncos tragedy, the Boulets’ story serves as a beacon of hope and resilience. Their work continues to inspire, ensuring that Logan’s legacy endures for years to come. In a world that often feels divided, their efforts remind us of the transformative power of kindness, compassion, and community.

In the end, the Boulets’ story is not just about loss—it’s about the extraordinary good that can emerge from tragedy. It’s about the ripple effect of one person’s decision and the difference it can make in the lives of countless others. As Canada moves forward, the Boulet family’s dedication to organ donation will remain a powerful reminder of the importance of giving, sharing, and living with purpose.
