Deadliest Listeria Outbreak in Over a Decade Linked to Recalled Frozen Nutrition Shakes

A Growing Outbreak with Severe Consequences

Federal and state health officials have announced a rapidly growing listeria outbreak linked to recalled frozen supplemental nutrition shakes, resulting in 38 confirmed infections and 12 fatalities across 21 states. The contaminated products were manufactured by Prairie Farms Dairy at a facility in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Swabs collected from the processing area of the plant tested positive for listeria, and the investigation is ongoing, according to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The affected states include Alabama, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, North Carolina, Nevada, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, and West Virginia.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has reported that the outbreak includes illnesses dating back to 2018, with 20 cases occurring in 2023 and 2024 alone. Of the 38 individuals for whom detailed information is available, 37 have been hospitalized, highlighting the severity of the infections. Notably, the majority of those infected were residents of long-term care facilities or were hospitalized before falling ill, underscoring the vulnerability of these populations to listeria infections.

This outbreak has already surpassed the death toll of a 2024 listeria outbreak linked to Boar’s Head deli meats, which caused 10 deaths and 57 illnesses. It is now considered one of the deadliest listeria outbreaks in the U.S. since 2011, when contaminated cantaloupe caused widespread illness and fatalities.


Listeria Infections: Understanding the Risks

Listeria monocytogenes, the bacteria responsible for this outbreak, can cause severe and sometimes fatal infections, particularly in vulnerable populations such as the elderly, young children, and individuals with weakened immune systems. While healthy individuals may experience milder symptoms like fever, headache, nausea, and diarrhea, the infection can lead to more serious complications, including miscarriages and stillbirths in pregnant women.

The CDC and FDA are urging consumers, especially those in high-risk groups, to take immediate action to avoid exposure to contaminated products. The outbreak has raised concerns about food safety, particularly in institutional settings like nursing homes, where the recalled shakes were primarily distributed.


Recalled Products and Consumer Guidance

The recalled products include Lyons ReadyCare and Sysco Imperial Frozen Supplemental Shakes, which were supplied by Prairie Farms Dairy and distributed by Lyons Magnus, a Fresno, California-based food manufacturer. These shakes were sold in four-ounce servings and came in flavors such as vanilla, chocolate, strawberry, and strawberry banana. The recalled products have best-by dates ranging from February 21, 2025, to February 21, 2026.

Lyons Magnus issued the recall on February 22, 2024, and has advised consumers to "quarantine" any recalled products they may have. The company has provided additional information on its website and encourages consumers to contact them directly at frozenshakerecall@lyonsmagnus.com for further assistance.
