The Australian Grand Prix weekend got off to a promising start for Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, who topped the timing sheets in Free Practice 2 (FP2) on Friday. However, the momentum shifted dramatically during qualifying on Saturday, as Leclerc struggled to maintain competitiveness, ultimately securing a seventh-place finish. This stark contrast between his dominant performance in FP2 and his struggles in qualifying has raised questions about the consistency and setup of the Ferrari SF-25. Leclerc acknowledged that changes were made to the car’s setup ahead of qualifying, which seemed to hinder performance as the session progressed. Despite his early confidence, the Monegasque driver found himself battling inconsistency and tire overheating issues, which collectively made it difficult to challenge for a pole position.

Struggles with Tire Management and Setup Changes

Leclerc pointed out that the issues with the SF-25 became more apparent as qualifying pushed on. While he performed well in Q1, his pace dropped in Q2 and further deteriorated in Q3. He explained that the car’s balance and performance window narrowed significantly, making it challenging to put together a clean lap. Tire overheating, particularly in the final sector of the Albert Park circuit, was a recurring issue that Leclerc struggled with more on Saturday than during Friday’s practice sessions. This overheating not only affected his lap times but also highlighted potential limitations in the car’s setup. Leclerc emphasized the need for Ferrari to investigate these issues thoroughly to maximize their chances in Sunday’s race.

Mixed Feelings About the SF-25’s Performance Window

When asked whether the SF-25 has a narrower performance window compared to its predecessor, the SF-24, Leclerc refrained from drawing definitive conclusions. He admitted that Q3 was particularly challenging, but he was hesitant to speculate about whether this was a broader issue with the car. Leclerc noted that prior to qualifying, there were no clear signs of such struggles, suggesting that the problems may have been specific to the conditions of the session. While he acknowledged the difficulties, he remained cautious about overreacting, choosing instead to focus on the immediate task of analyzing the data and preparing for the race.

McLaren’s Dominance and Ferrari’s Quest for Answers

The qualifying session was dominated by McLaren’s Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, who secured the top two positions on the grid. Meanwhile, both Ferraris finished outside the top six, with Leclerc in seventh and his teammate in eighth. Leclerc expressed surprise at the size of the gap between Ferrari and McLaren, admitting that it was wider than he had anticipated. He hoped that the race would present an opportunity for Ferrari to close this gap and fight more competitively. However, he also acknowledged that the current challenges with the SF-25 would need to be addressed if Ferrari were to challenge for victory.
