Iberdrola has completed the sale of its French onshore renewable energy portfolio to Technique Solaire, a France-based renewable energy developer. The transaction includes 118MW of operational wind assets along with a development pipeline totaling 639MW of onshore wind and solar photovoltaic projects. This divestment represents Iberdrola’s strategic shift to focus investments on core markets and regulated networks.
According to the announcement, Technique Solaire now holds full ownership of Iberdrola Renouvelables France, marking the company’s first expansion into the French onshore wind sector. As part of the agreement, 21 employees from Iberdrola’s French operations will transfer to Technique Solaire, bringing technical and operational expertise to support the transition.
Strategic Realignment for Iberdrola
The sale aligns with Iberdrola Group’s broader strategy to concentrate investment resources on core geographic markets, particularly the United States and the United Kingdom. The company is prioritizing regulated networks and long-term contracted generation assets as it streamlines its global portfolio. This approach allows Iberdrola to optimize capital allocation toward markets where it maintains stronger competitive positioning.
This marks Iberdrola’s fifth major transaction during 2024, following previous asset sales in Spain and Hungary. The company has also expanded solar capacity through a joint venture with Norges earlier in the year. These moves collectively demonstrate a deliberate portfolio rationalization strategy focused on market concentration rather than geographic diversification.
Technique Solaire Expands Into Wind Energy
For Technique Solaire, the acquisition represents a significant strategic milestone as it diversifies beyond its existing solar and battery energy storage operations. Thomas de Moussac, co-founder and managing director of Technique Solaire Development, stated that entering the wind sector provides immediate access to a substantial operational portfolio with repowering potential and a robust development pipeline. The company previously achieved success in solar and biogas projects across France.
Additionally, the transaction strengthens Technique Solaire’s position in the French renewable energy market by expanding its technology portfolio. The acquired assets include both operational wind farms generating immediate revenue and development projects that offer future growth opportunities. This combination provides the company with both short-term cash flow and long-term expansion potential.
French Onshore Renewables Portfolio Details
The 118MW of operating wind assets transferred in the deal provide established revenue streams under existing power purchase agreements. Meanwhile, the 639MW development pipeline offers significant growth potential across both wind and solar technologies. The pipeline projects are at various stages of development, according to industry sources familiar with the transaction.
However, specific financial terms of the sale were not disclosed by either party. Authorities have not confirmed the timeline for bringing the development pipeline projects to operational status. The transfer of operational expertise through the 21 employees joining Technique Solaire is expected to facilitate continuity in asset management and project development activities.
Global Portfolio Adjustments Continue
Iberdrola Internacional manages the group’s operations outside Spain and the UK, ensuring compliance with national electricity market regulations across multiple regions. The company continues to adjust its international footprint based on strategic priorities and market conditions. In contrast to its exit from France, Iberdrola recently expanded transmission infrastructure in Brazil, where its subsidiary Neoenergia completed the Alto Paranaíba project ahead of schedule in January.
The French onshore renewables portfolio sale supports both companies’ strategic objectives while reshaping the competitive landscape in France’s renewable energy sector. The integration of Iberdrola’s former French assets into Technique Solaire’s operations is expected to proceed over the coming months as transferred employees transition and operational protocols are aligned.
