Flint Group has launched EkoCure XS shrink white inks, marking an expansion of its UV LED dual-curing flexo ink product line for the packaging industry. The new inks are specifically engineered to deliver a stable, smooth white base on shrink-sleeve packaging without cracking or flaking during the shrinking process, according to the company.
The product is now available to customers in North America and can be integrated with other inks in the Flint Group range. These inks are designed for compatibility with both UV and UV LED curing presses, offering converters greater flexibility in their production operations.
Technical Specifications for UV LED Flexo Ink Performance
To achieve optimal performance, Flint Group recommends that the total thickness of printed ink layers does not exceed 15 billion cubic microns. This specification is critical for maintaining the ink’s integrity during the shrink-sleeve application process.
For best results in shrink performance, opacity, and friction characteristics, the company advises using a combination of first and second down white layers. This layering approach helps ensure consistent quality across different shrink-sleeve applications.
Production Efficiency Benefits for Converters
The new shrink sleeve inks may help converters reduce both time and waste during production, according to Flint Group. The formulation eliminates the need to remove ink in standard tape or crinkle tests, streamlining quality control processes.
Additionally, the product addresses one of the most challenging aspects of shrink-sleeve production by providing a more predictable and reliable white base layer. This stability is particularly important for maintaining graphic quality throughout the packaging lifecycle.
Industry Expert Perspective
Rob Stendahl, R&D technology manager at Flint Group North America, said the company is “removing uncertainty from the most challenging part of shrink sleeve production” with the new formulation. He emphasized that the inks are designed to resist common challenges in shrink-sleeve applications.
According to Stendahl, the new formulation delivers “a glossy, durable finish that keeps branded graphics looking their best.” He characterized the EkoCure XS shrink whites as “practical, high-performance inks that work in real production environments,” enabling printers to operate with confidence while ensuring brands maintain a flawless appearance on retail shelves.
Broader Product Portfolio Developments
The launch of EkoCure XS shrink white inks follows other recent developments in Flint Group’s product portfolio. In November 2024, the company announced that its Novasens Prime sheetfed packaging inks and Novaset water-based coatings produced in Europe now meet composition standards set out by the German Printing Ink Regulation.
Meanwhile, the expansion of UV LED curing technology continues to gain traction in the packaging industry due to its energy efficiency and environmental benefits. The dual-curing capability of the new inks positions them to serve converters operating with different equipment configurations.
Market Positioning and Availability
The EkoCure XS shrink white inks represent Flint Group’s continued investment in specialized solutions for the shrink-sleeve segment of the packaging market. The compatibility with existing product lines allows customers to integrate the new inks without extensive reformulation of their printing processes.
However, specific pricing information and detailed technical data sheets have not been publicly disclosed. Converters interested in the product can contact Flint Group directly for additional specifications and ordering information tailored to their specific production requirements.
The company has not announced plans for broader international availability beyond North America, though future expansion to other regions remains possible as market demand develops.
