The world of coffee has become an unlikely battleground in the escalating tensions between the United States and Canada. In a clever and humorous act of defiance, many Canadian coffee shops have decided to rename the popular drink known as an Americano to the Canadiano. This subtle yet symbolic change is part of a broader movement to assert Canadian pride and push back against recent political and economic tensions between the two neighboring nations.

The shift comes as Canada prepares to impose a 25% import tariff on certain U.S. goods, a retaliatory measure against U.S. tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum. Additionally, comments made by U.S. President Donald Trump about the possibility of Canada becoming the 51st state have not gone over well north of the border. While the name change may seem like a small gesture, it reflects a growing sense of patriotism and resistance among Canadians.

The Origins of the Canadiano Movement

The idea of renaming the Americano to the Canadiano didn’t start with a government decree or a corporate marketing campaign. Instead, it was sparked by a grassroots initiative from a British Columbia-based coffee company called Kicking Horse Coffee. In a since-deleted Instagram post, the company encouraged other coffee shops across Canada to join them in making the switch.

Interestingly, Kicking Horse Coffee had already been serving the drink under the name Canadiano since they opened their doors in 2008. However, the recent rise in U.S.-Canada tensions provided the perfect opportunity to turn this small act of defiance into a national movement.
