Huawei has unveiled the Watch GT Runner 2, marking the first update to its dedicated running watch line in nearly five years. The new wearable was announced globally, though it will not be available in the United States, with pricing set at £349.99 in the UK and availability in other international markets.

The company has positioned the device as a competitor to premium running watches like the Garmin Forerunner 970, emphasizing advanced GPS capabilities and professional-grade training metrics. According to Huawei, the watch incorporates partnerships with marathon legend Eliud Kipchoge to deliver features tailored specifically for serious runners.

Advanced GPS Technology in the Huawei Watch GT Runner 2

The standout feature of the Huawei Watch GT Runner 2 is its innovative approach to GPS accuracy through what the company calls a “3D floating antenna architecture.” This design addresses a common challenge in sports watches by incorporating a thin non-metallic dielectric bezel layer and a cutout in the metal side casing. Additionally, the device includes dual-band GPS to enhance location tracking precision during outdoor activities.

However, early testing suggests room for improvement. According to independent reviews from DC Rainmaker, GPS performance does not yet fully match that of the Garmin Forerunner 970, though software updates could potentially close this gap in the coming months.

Running-Specific Features and Training Metrics

The watch includes a dedicated Marathon Mode designed to support distance runners with refuel reminders and dynamic pace guidance throughout their training and races. These features aim to help athletes optimize their performance during long-distance events.

The Huawei Watch GT Runner 2 also offers comprehensive athlete metrics including lactate threshold calculation, VO2 Max measurement, running power analysis, training load monitoring, and post-exercise recovery time suggestions. These advanced statistics provide runners with detailed insights into their fitness levels and training progress.

Hardware Specifications and Design

The device features a 43mm diameter case with a 1.32-inch OLED display offering 466 x 466 pixel resolution and a titanium bezel construction. Despite a stated 5ATM water resistance rating, Huawei indicates the watch is suitable for depths up to 40 meters, exceeding the capabilities of many 10ATM-rated devices.

In contrast to full-featured smartwatches like the Apple Watch, the Huawei Watch GT Runner 2 operates as a specialized fitness tracker with extended battery performance. The company claims up to 14 days of battery life on a single charge, significantly outlasting traditional smartwatches that typically require daily charging.

Three color options are available at launch: Dusk Blue, Dawn Orange, and Midnight Black. Meanwhile, Huawei also announced the global launch of the Band 11 wearable, featuring a 1.62-inch OLED screen and two-week battery life, with availability scheduled for March.

The Band 11 Pro variant will include GPS functionality, though the company has not yet confirmed which markets will receive both the standard and Pro versions of the fitness band. Further details regarding regional availability and specific feature sets are expected as the March launch date approaches.
