A member of the Senedd representing Clwyd South has drawn attention to a worrying trend of increasing violence targeting staff in Welsh schools.
During First Minister’s Questions, the Clwyd South MS emphasised the importance of respecting teachers and unequivocally condemned violence or abuse against them.
The Senedd member had previously engaged with the Wrexham Primary Headteachers’ Federation and is scheduled to meet with local heads, a Wrexham MS, and the Education Minister to address the issue.
In the Senedd, the member queried the Welsh Government’s support for schools grappling with a rise in abuse and violence against staff.
In response, the First Minister reiterated the government’s commitment to ensuring safe school environments, stressing the duty of local authorities and schools. He highlighted ongoing funding for education well-being services offering guidance and assistance to schools across Wales.
The issue of violence against educators had been discussed during previous meetings with Wrexham headteachers. During discussions with the First Minister, concerns were raised about the exacerbation of challenges in education due to the pandemic, particularly a sharp increase in assaults on teachers and teaching assistants, including in primary schools.
The First Minister aligned with the concerns, firmly asserting zero tolerance towards the abuse of public servants, particularly educators, but stressed the need for proactive measures beyond condemnation.
He highlighted efforts by the Minister for Education to develop resources, including a toolkit for senior leaders, aimed at de-escalating conflicts and managing tensions in the classroom.
Following the Senedd session, the Clwyd South representative revealed additional steps taken to address concerns within the education sector, including advocacy with the Education Minister regarding potential funding cuts. They extended an invitation for the Minister to engage directly with a delegation of local parents, allowing him to understand first hand the concerns and potential impact on children and schools.
