Scaffolding has become a prominent sight on The Gateway student accommodation building situated on Ruston Way in Lincoln. This development follows the evacuation of approximately 500 tenants from the premises in October 2022, prompted by concerns over fire safety within the structure.
The University of Lincoln, which oversees the accommodation, took swift action in response to an independent fire safety assessment conducted on The Gateway. The assessment revealed significant shortcomings, necessitating urgent measures to ensure the safety of occupants. Consequently, students, predominantly in their first year of studies, were instructed to vacate the premises within a week, a directive that left many understandably distressed.
In recognition of the disruption caused to their university experience, the evicted students were offered compensation of £500 each. However, the closure of The Gateway persisted, rendering hundreds of apartments uninhabitable while offices at the building’s base remained operational.
The closure stemmed from a series of recommendations outlined in the fire safety assessment, which pinpointed critical areas requiring improvement. These recommendations encompassed enhancements to fire stopping mechanisms and stairwells, aimed at bolstering internal fire compartmentation within the building.
Despite initial hopes of reoccupation by the 2023/24 academic year, progress on rectifying the safety concerns has been delayed. Surveying work commenced only as the new academic cohort arrived, further prolonging the displacement of students reliant on the accommodation.
Recently, scaffolding has enveloped a significant portion of The Gateway, signalling the commencement of remedial works. A spokesperson for the University of Lincoln confirmed the initiation of these works, emphasising ongoing communication with the university to relay project developments.
Previously, the university expressed optimism regarding the eventual reopening of The Gateway to students upon the completion of necessary works. However, the timeline for reoccupation remains uncertain, pending the satisfactory resolution of identified safety deficiencies.
