Leaving Miami: A Journey to Simplicity and Savings
In my early 20s, Miami was the epitome of excitement—a vibrant city where every day felt like a party. The energy was electric, and the cultural diversity was unparalleled. However, as time went on, the high cost of living began to take its toll. Balancing school and work while barely making ends meet was exhausting. The constant pressure to keep up with Miami’s fast-paced lifestyle left me drained and uncertain about my future. I started envisioning a different life, one where I could save money and live more simply. This vision led me to Portland, Oregon, a city I idealized for its lower cost of living, vibrant culture, and proximity to nature. But before making that big move, I decided to take a step in the right direction by relocating to a small town in Central Florida. Little did I know, this temporary move would turn into a 15-year chapter of my life that I wouldn’t trade for the world.
Miami: A City of Endless Energy and Hidden Struggles
Miami was undeniably fun. It was the kind of place where every day could feel like a celebration, with its beautiful beaches, bustling nightlife, and diverse culinary scene. But beneath the glamour, I found it increasingly difficult to save money. The cost of living was high, and the city’s social dynamics made it hard to resist the constant temptation to spend. Whether it was paying for parking, club entrance fees, or dinners at trendy restaurants, Miami’s lifestyle came with a price tag. By the time I left, I was ready for a change of pace—a place where I could slow down and focus on what truly mattered. Miami will always hold a special place in my heart, but it wasn’t the right fit for the life I wanted to build.
Discovering the Charm of Small-Town Florida
When I moved to the Space Coast, a few hours north of Miami, I wasn’t sure what to expect. The town was quiet, with a slower pace of life that felt almost foreign to me at first. But as I settled in, I began to appreciate the simplicity and peace it offered. The lower cost of living made it easier to save money, and the natural beauty of the area was a constant source of joy. I found myself spending more time outdoors than I ever did in Miami, whether it was walking on the beach, hiking in state parks, or simply enjoying the wildlife in my own neighborhood. Over time, I realized that this small Florida town had given me something invaluable—a sense of rest and contentment I hadn’t known I was missing.
Raising My Son in a Nature-Filled Paradise
One of the most rewarding aspects of living on the Space Coast has been raising my son here. From a young age, I wanted him to have a childhood filled with time in nature, something I didn’t experience much growing up. In Miami, the idea of “going out” often meant visiting the latest restaurant or club, but here, it means heading to the beach or a hiking trail. The slower pace of life in our small town has allowed him to enjoy a more relaxed childhood, one where rest and family time are valued. As a teacher, I also appreciate the financial stability this move has provided. Owning a home and being able to go on vacations without breaking the bank are luxuries I wouldn’t have been able to afford in Miami. It’s been incredible to watch my son thrive in this environment, and I feel grateful to have given him such a unique upbringing.
The Trade-offs of Small-Town Life
Of course, no place is perfect, and there are days when I miss the excitement of Miami. The endless options for dining and entertainment, the cultural richness, and the energy of the city are things I still appreciate. But the trade-offs of small-town life have been worth it for me. Here, life feels more balanced. I’ve learned to cherish quieter evenings at home, and I’ve discovered a newfound love for the outdoors. While Miami will always feel like home, I’ve grown to love the simplicity and peace of my small Florida town. It’s a place where I can truly rest and enjoy the beauty of nature without the constant pressure to be “on the go.”
Embracing Life in Small-Town Florida
Fifteen years have passed since I made that temporary move to the Space Coast, and I’m still here—happily so. What was once a stepping stone to Portland became a destination in itself. Florida, it turns out, has so much more to offer than the glitz and glamour of Miami. From the pristine beaches to the lush state parks, I’ve discovered a natural beauty I never knew existed in my home state. This move taught me that sometimes, the best things in life are the ones we don’t plan for. Living in a small Florida town has been a gift, one that has allowed me to save money, spend more time with my son, and live a life that truly feels like home. And as I look to the future, I can’t imagine anywhere else I’d rather be.
