Peterborough’s Former Nightclub Site Approved for Residential and Retail Development

A substantial residential and commercial development on the grounds of a former nightclub in Peterborough has been granted approval by the city council. The proposal, submitted by Westwood Commercial Property in December 2023, has now received formal consent following initial approval approximately nine months prior.

The project, set to transform the site of The Solstice nightclub in Northminster, entails the construction of up to 112 new flats alongside two retail units. The development, consisting of two separate blocks, will feature a mixture of one and two-bedroom flats, catering to varying housing needs within the community. Additionally, provisions for approximately 148 cycle parking spaces highlight a commitment to sustainable transportation solutions.

Initially, the plans included provisions for student accommodation and an underground car park. However, these elements have been omitted from the final proposal. Instead, the focus remains on delivering high-quality residential units and enhancing the streetscape with retail offerings.

The Solstice nightclub, formerly a bustling social hub and a cornerstone of Peterborough’s nightlife scene, ceased operations in October 2020. Subsequently, the site underwent demolition two years later, paving the way for this ambitious redevelopment initiative.

According to a design and access statement accompanying the application, the development will adopt a considered layout, featuring a ‘U’ shape design that encompasses a central private courtyard accessible to all residents. The eastern accommodation block, spanning three storeys, will exhibit its unique architectural character, while the western apartments will soar to ten storeys, serving as a prominent landmark at the junction of Northminster and Brook Street. Retail units on the ground floor are poised to invigorate the surrounding public realm, fostering a vibrant and dynamic urban environment.

In a bid to underscore the project’s significance, the statement highlighted the substantial public benefits it promises to deliver to the city and its residents. By providing top-tier accommodation options and introducing new retail amenities in the heart of Peterborough, the development is poised to make a meaningful contribution to the local community.

The approval of this development marks a significant milestone in the ongoing evolution of Peterborough’s urban landscape. As construction commences and the vision outlined in the proposal takes shape, the project is poised to redefine the city’s skyline and contribute to its continued growth and prosperity.

In conclusion, the green light granted to the plans for 112 new flats and accompanying retail units underscores Peterborough’s commitment to urban revitalisation and sustainable development. With a focus on quality living spaces and vibrant retail offerings, the project stands poised to enhance the city’s appeal and enrich the lives of its residents for years to come.
