Sheffield’s beloved Lowedges Festival is making a triumphant return, boasting a vibrant line up of activities and entertainment set to captivate audiences. After a hiatus in 2023 due to logistical challenges, the festival is back with a bang, relocated to the Bowshaw Showground in North Derbyshire, just a stone’s throw away from its original venue.

Previously held in Greenhill Park, the festival faced setbacks, including a shortage of volunteers, prompting its temporary closure. However, thanks to the concerted efforts of the Sheffield Council South Local Area Committee and a rejuvenated organising committee led by a local councillor, the festival is set to dazzle attendees once again.

Scheduled for Sunday, August 11, from 12 noon until 5 pm, the newly christened Lowedges and S8 Festival promises a day filled with an eclectic mix of entertainment and activities. Festival-goers can expect a diverse range of attractions across various arenas, ensuring there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

The festival’s entertainment line up is nothing short of impressive, featuring:

  • Arena one: Viking re-enactment/living history
  • Arena two: Medieval re-enactment/living history
  • Arena three: Main stage featuring singers, dancers, birds of prey, and more
  • Arena four: Dog show
  • Arena five: Half-sized football pitch showcasing local league teams
  • Classic vehicle show, including buses, lorries, cars, bikes, trikes, and scooters
  • Funfair provided by Tuby’s of Mexborough
  • 1950s funfair stall area
  • Farmers’ market
  • Car boot area
  • Hot food from around the world

The festival’s grand opening will be officiated by Sheffield charity stalwart, alongside the esteemed mayor of Sheffield, underscoring its significance within the community.

Spanning over 20 acres, the Bowshaw Showground provides an expansive backdrop for the festivities, cementing the event’s status as one of Yorkshire and Derbyshire’s premier attractions for 2024.

Reflecting on its legacy, the Lowedges Festival traces its roots back to 2008 when it first graced the cultural landscape of Sheffield. Over the years, it evolved into a multifaceted celebration, incorporating classic car shows, dog displays, and an array of fairground rides. At its peak, the festival boasted over 100 stalls and welcomed upwards of 15,000 visitors, highlighting its enduring popularity.

Despite facing disruptions, including the Covid-19 pandemic, which halted proceedings in 2020, the festival persevered, staging a successful comeback in 2022. Now, with a renewed sense of purpose and a fresh venue, the Lowedges and S8 Festival is poised to reclaim its position as a highlight of the region’s social calendar.

As anticipation mounts and preparations reach a crescendo, organisers are gearing up to deliver an unforgettable experience for attendees of all ages. With a fusion of entertainment, cultural showcases, and culinary delights, the festival promises to reignite the spirit of community and celebration that defines Sheffield’s vibrant cultural landscape.

In the spirit of unity and resilience, the Lowedges Festival stands as a testament to the unwavering spirit of its organisers and the enduring support of its loyal patrons. As the countdown begins, all eyes are on the Bowshaw Showground, where a day of festivities awaits, promising joy, camaraderie, and cherished memories for years to come.
