A Journey to Parenthood: Damian and Pasan’s Story

Introduction: The Dream of Family

Damian and Pasan Fernando, a devoted gay couple, have embarked on an extraordinary journey to parenthood, facing numerous challenges along the way. Their dream of starting a family led them to surrogacy after six years of exploration, ultimately choosing an agency in Cyprus due to UK surrogacy laws requiring the surrogate to initiate contact. This decision, while promising, has led to unforeseen complications, leaving them stranded in Cyprus as they await passports for their newborn twins, River and Liko.

Embracing Surrogacy Abroad

Faced with the difficulties of finding a surrogate in the UK, the couple ventured abroad, discovering the World Center of Baby in Cyprus through a recommendation. In October 2023, they initiated the process, opting to use Pasan’s sperm and an egg donor whose features aligned with Damian’s, ensuring a familial resemblance. This meticulous selection process culminated in the joyful news of a twin pregnancy in April 2024, a moment Pasan described as "quite surreal."

The Birth Experience: A Mix of Magic and Reality

The twins were born on January 3, 2025, via a scheduled C-section. The couple cherished the magical moment of meeting their sons, Liko and River, with each child bearing a striking resemblance to their respective fathers. Despite the initial euphoria, the realities of parenthood swiftly set in, as they navigated the challenges of caring for newborns in a foreign country.

Passport Issues and the Struggle to Return Home

The couple’s excitement to return home was swiftly tempered by bureaucratic hurdles. Their passport applications, submitted on January 13, 2025, have been delayed due to mislaid documents and miscommunication. These issues have resulted in additional expenses, as they transition between Airbnb accommodations, compounding the financial strain of an already costly surrogacy process. Damian expressed their frustration, noting, "Every single day it is something."

Financial and Emotional Toll

The prolonged delay has imposed significant financial and emotional challenges on the couple. With Pasan on a year’s leave and Damian facing potential unpaid absence, the uncertainty of their return adds to their distress. They are eager to introduce their children to their grandparents, a meeting delayed by the ongoing passport issues. Despite these hardships, they remain resilient, determined not to let their circumstances overshadow the joy of their new family.

Hope and Advice for Future Parents

Reflecting on their experience, Damian and Pasan emphasize the importance of vigilance and perseverance for prospective parents. "Don’t give up hope," Pasan advises, acknowledging the challenges yet affirming the possibility of success. Their story serves as a testament to the power of determination and love, even in the face of adversity. As they await resolution, they hope to inspire others and prevent similar situations for future families. The Home Office has been contacted for comment, as the couple continues their quest to bring their sons home.
