In a surprising turn of events, Downs Junior School, located on Rugby Road, has recently received a ‘good’ rating from Ofsted in its latest inspection, marking a notable shift from its previous ‘outstanding’ status awarded 12 years ago.
Back in March 2011, Downs Junior School was hailed as ‘outstanding’ by Ofsted, earning accolades for its commitment to education and overall excellence. However, the school has now welcomed its new ‘good’ rating with open arms, citing changes in Ofsted’s evaluation criteria as a contributing factor.
The school administration jointly expressed their delight, stating, “We are delighted with the overall outcome, as we are very aware of how stringent the current Ofsted framework is in comparison to previous models. We are particularly pleased that the inspection team recognized many of our areas of strength.”
They emphasized the significance of the school’s community and the positive relationships that contribute to its success. The collective effort of both students and staff was commended for their remarkable attributes and daily contributions to the school environment.
The recently released report acknowledged the school’s 508 pupils for their “excellent social skills” and enthusiasm. The document highlighted that pupils take pride in the various opportunities and experiences offered by the school, including competitions, assemblies, and a diverse range of clubs such as ‘Downs Play,’ chess club, ‘Mega Choir,’ and writing club.
The report underlined the school’s strong connections with the community, noting that parents appreciate the nurturing approach in providing support for pupils. Ofsted inspectors lauded the positive attributes exhibited by both students and staff.
However, the report did identify areas for improvement. It suggested that the school could enhance the consistency in teaching pupils to read confidently and fluently. Additionally, it recommended improvements in the methods teachers employ to assess pupils’ learning.
One distinctive feature highlighted in the report was the school’s unique museum, Take Shelter. Pupils expressed their gratitude for having their underground air raid shelter, where they gain a realistic experience of learning about life during World War II. The report conveyed the pupils’ sentiments, stating, “Pupils state they ‘feel lucky’ to have their own underground air raid shelter.”
This news comes on the heels of another local school, Stanford Infant School, which also experienced a shift in its Ofsted rating. After 15 years, Stanford Infant School lost its ‘outstanding’ rating and received a ‘good’ rating in its most recent inspection in March 2022.
The changing landscape of Ofsted ratings in these well-established schools prompts reflections on the evolving criteria and expectations in the education sector.
