Zack Snyder has been one of Hollywood’s most famous directors for years. Before Netflix released its zombie hit ” Army of the Dead ” this year, the release of the Snyder cut from “Justice League” caused a sensation, which made Snyder the celebrated savior of the DC universe with many fans. Now its triumphant advance continues!
Snyder announced some time ago that he once submitted a “Star Wars” film to Lucasfilm. At that time the production company was still under the direction of George Lucas. His film was set in the galaxy far, far away, but had completely different characters and new planets.
The title of Snyder’s project is “Rebel Moon” and is based in the best “Star Wars” fashion on the samurai films by Akira Kurosawa, which also had a massive influence on George Lucas. Snyder was particularly inspired by “Seven Samurai”, as can be seen in the official “Rebel Moon” synopsis.
When a peaceful colony on the edge of the galaxy is threatened by the armies of the tyrannical regent Belisarius, they send a young woman with a mysterious past to recruit warriors from neighboring planets for defense.
After Disney took over Lucasfilms in 2012, Snyder’s idea fell by the wayside and was never taken up again. Now, however, Netflix has taken a liking to Snyder’s sci-fi film and has given “Rebel Moon” the green light. Snyder plans to start filming in early 2022.
Since Netflix, unlike Disney +, has no rights to the “Star Wars” universe, “Rebel Moon” is of course told independently of the galaxy far, far away and opens up its own universe. Snyder hopes that “Rebel Moon” could one day also become a gigantic franchise.
Netflix has already secured Zack Snyder’s second project, which is hoped to turn it into an extensive film and series universe. With “Army of the Dead” Netflix is already a lot further and we can expect an “Army of the Dead” anime series and a prequel with Matthias Schweighöfer this year.
